Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton used to be friends, what happened?

"I know her, and she'd make a good president or vice president."

An unusual quote from the now official 45th President of the United States from 2008 about Hillary Clinton and her previous campaign towards presidency. As strange as it sounds and despite the recent clashes and dramatic results of the 2016 election, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have had a closer relationship than the recent televised debates and open criticisms would have most people believe. Not only were the Clintons around for Trumps most recent wedding, but the the Trump family is known to have donated over $100,000 towards the Clinton Foundation charity and Donald himself has been known to enjoy a round of golf with former president Bill Clinton himself. So what changed?

Hillary and Donald have an interesting relationship, with the Democrat herself receiving donations back in 2002 from Trump and his Son Donald Trump Jr according to state records. During her time as New York senator this early support was not unusual or isolated and further donations and quotes supporting Hillary came from Trump Sr. After these endorsements and with the two now linked within New York it seemed as though the Clintons and Trump were enjoying their new relationship. With Hillary and Donald both making the effort to maintain a positive public image and the support from Trump no doubt going a long way towards making headway into any projects or plans that involved the senate it seemed impossible that within a few short years their relationship was about to face an altogether new threat.

Unfortunately the good times were not to last and when Trump joined the Republican party in 2009 the seeds of conflict were well and truly planted. Despite being speculatively considered for candidacy on multiple occasions, it was only in 2015 that Trump amid rampant speculation finally announced in earnest his plans to run for president during a campaign rally while giving a speech at Trump Towers. Begining a campaign that would ultimately win him the presidency and for the first time formally put him in opposition to Hillary herself.

Trump was very open about his interactions with people and politicians in the past stating that he; "Is a businessman" and that it was his job to get on with people. The sentiment extended to Hillary Clinton and others early in his campaign to explain away his past support and endorsements towards them. Later on as polls drew near and their respective campaigns intensified, Trump's attacks towards the Clinton campaign extended not just to former associate Hillary personally but even to her husband as any past friendships seemed to fall away in the fight for supremacy.

In conclusion it's still hard to see as the dust settles exactly where the once happy and public relationship between Hillary and Donald went sour. Following the outcome both sides called for unity after a hard fought battle for success and while the future remains as mysterious as ever the stage is set for Donald to take his new seat, while Hillary gracious in defeat and despite her loss already announced her intentions to work with Donald towards making America great.

As for Donald Trump the 45th president will no doubt be driving the country into 2017 for better or worse. But now with former friend and foe Hillary already extending her hand, perhaps the recent burning of bridges can be put aside as new foundations and friendships are made. While America moves into another year growing ever greater, and while political hands are shook people will no doubt come to understand that despite their political views or personal differences; "It's just business."
